During our first few days together, I like to spend a good chunk of time having discussions with the kiddos about ways we can make our classroom a safe, respectful, responsible, caring, and fun environment. We came up with some really great ideas and eventually drafted our Classroom Promise. The kiddos really wanted to focus on making sure everyone feels they belong, have a friendly face they can go to for help, and that we work together like a team to solve problems and help each other do their best, so this is what we came up with. We will refer back to this throughout the year as a friendly reminder of our promise and our goals for the year.
The kiddos created their own self-portraits. Under their smiling faces, you'll notice they've also done some writing. We discussed the many ways we can be smart: Number Smart, Nature Smart, Body Smart, Self Smart, Team Smart, Art Smart, Music Smart, and Word Smart. Each kiddo chose one way they are smart and which makes them unique and told us why they chose that particular "smart". We'll keep these up all year, so it should be fun to compare what the kiddos made this early in the year with what they make later on in the year :)
We've also begun our first math topic, which will be all about measurement. The kiddos really enjoy this topic because it's very hands-on and fairly concrete for them. It's a nice way to ease into first grade math.
We started our first topic by playing a math game. During this game, students spun a spinner and measured a vine on their paper with that number of cubes. They added on to the cube trains until it matched all the vines on the paper, and the first person to fill the vines was the winner. This was a nice way to introduce partner work.
Have a wonderful weekend!
