What's Happening in 1H:

Reading: We are finishing up a unit on cause and effect.  We tied in some science to help the kiddos understand the difference between cause and effect.  This all stemmed from a class discussion about what a "domino effect" is and we decided to build our own "domino machine" similar to a Rube Goldberg machine after watching a video about them.  This was an exciting way for us to discuss cause and effect, testing hypotheses, troubleshooting and tweaking, and working together as a team to try to solve problems.

Math: We have finished our Topic 10 and Topic 11 units dealing with adding and subtracting tens and ones.  We are now moving on to identifying and counting coins.  We'll have lots of fun stations related to money.  The kids always really enjoy this unit.  Stay tuned for a note about your child bringing real change to school in a marked plastic bag.  At the conclusion of our unit after learning how to count coins, we will take our coins to the gas station for an ice cream cone!

Science:  We've started our butterfly/caterpillar unit.  Our class caterpillars have gone through some dramatic changes in the last few days!  We've learned about the first three stages through research we've done together.  We know the first stage is an egg, the next stage is larva, and the third stage is pupa.  We'll soon release our butterflies after they go through their final changes.

Summer Activities/Step Up to 2nd:  Summer is a great time to brush up on the skills learned in first grade which will be necessary for success in second grade.  I'll be sending a note home soon asking ndividual families about a "Step Up to 2nd" activity book.  To cut down on paper, I'll only make these activity books for families who are interested (and this is entirely optional!)  It's important to remember to let your child ride his/her bike, play in the mud, go swimming, watch a baseball game, etc., but to also do at least 15-20 minutes of sustained reading OR some sort of math activity to keep them sharp for second grade :)

First Grade Field Trip: Our trip is coming up this Friday!  Students will need a sack lunch for this trip.  Stay tuned for a reminder.
