Standards Based Grading - IMPORTANT

Standards based grading is the grading method used by the Benton Community elementary centers.  This is the M, P, and AC you may have seen on your child's kindergarten report cards.  I have found some resources to share with you to help you better understand this shift in grading. When your child's work comes home, it will not have a raw score (ex. 9/10) or a percentage (90%).  Your child's work will have a M for "Meets the Standard", P for "Progressing Toward the Standard", or NY for "Not Yet".  Please note this NY feedback is different in 1H compared to what you've seen on the kindergarten report card.  The NY is equivalent to an AC or "Area of Concern."  I have been using these terms with students and feel like it is "Not Yet" is better language to use with kids.  You will continue to see AC on the report card in place of NY.   I understand some of this is confusing.  It's taken me years to make sense of it all, but I am confident that this is what is best for our students.  Please let me know if you need or would like clarification with any of this info.  Please check out the resources below.

Here are some other resources that may help make this info more clear.  This teacher uses the numbers 3, 2, and 1.  (M = 3, P = 2, NY/AC = 1)  I especially like the baking analogy!

(A huge thanks to Ms. Upah for sharing her blog post!)
