Each week, I'll be posting what your child will be working toward learning. In class, we talk about how these "I Can..." Statements are our learning goals. Although it's the focus of the week, we will revisit these goals all year. Not only do we discuss the idea that it's important to understand and still be able to do the things we learn all year, but also that sometimes, it takes longer than one week to understand and be able to do these things. I give the kids a lot of examples from my own school experience, so I always share my story about not understanding how numbers worked until I was in upper elementary school. They are always shocked to hear that a teacher (who supposedly knows everything....admittedly, I DO NOT! But it's always funny to hear their perspective) struggled with something as a student. It took years and years before I was able to "master" number sense.
I also use the analogy of The Tortoise and the Hare, which is perfect since we have a very real reminder of what a tortoise is like in our very own classroom :)
Here are this week's "I Can..." Statements:
I can describe characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key details.
I can read and write words with l-family blends (bl, cl, fl, gl)
I can express the length of an object using non-standard units.
I can compare and order three objects by length.
I can participate in collaborative conversations with peers and adults in small and larger groups.
