With our busy schedule during the day, I don't always have time to change out books. Instead, I have an associate change them out for me using your child's approximate reading level when they have time. It is my goal to personally change out your child's book at least once per week so I can read your comments, look at the texts they're reading, and make adjustments as necessary based on your feedback. I apologize if this doesn't happen consistently. However, it's ok for your child to have the same title more than once. When this happens, he/she can re-read it for fluency (smoothness, rate, expression, and stopping at periods.) If you notice your child consistently needing help with sight words, this is a great way for him/her to gain familiarity with those words without having to spend a lot of time decoding or figuring out the words.
Occasionally, your child may have an opportunity to choose his/her own Take Home Book to practice choosing books that are a good fit. As you've probably seen, sometimes they are able to choose a good fit book (not too easy, not too hard) and other times, they choose a title they think they might enjoy (and they might breeze through it. Again, pick a skill and have them focus on that skill, such as retelling the story or reading with expression.)
If you have books at home you would rather your child read, that is fine. Just make a note of it on the form included in the bag. Also, if it takes your child a few days to finish a title because of its length, that is ok, too.
If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please let me know. I value your feedback and want to make the home connection piece beneficial for both you and your child!
Mrs. Happel
