Our first annual Grinch Day began with a selection of our Class Grinch! Students who showed respectful, responsible, safe, and caring behavior yesterday consistently throughout the day were put into a drawing. Here was our lucky winner!
After working on a Grinch mystery picture, we conducted a science experiment. We saw how a liquid could quickly change to a solid (more like a goopy solid!) We made GRINCH GRIME! The kids had a great time mixing the ingredients, watching the transformation happen, and above all, touching the Grinch Grime. Each child had an opportunity to take some home in a double-bagged Ziploc, so look for that! You'll also find the recipe we used for Grinch Grime and some questions your child can answer at home. (Things got...a bit messy!) The Grinch Grime will keep indefinitely if sealed in a bag or container.
Here is a picture of our contribution to decorating the hallway. We wrote about ways we could help the Grinch's heart grow. They came up with some really great ideas like give him compliments, invite him to a holiday party, give him hugs, and, my personal favorite, play with him at recess. :)
We also completed a review of adjectives. Students brainstormed a list of adjectives to describe the Grinch before understanding the true meaning of Christmas and after. Then, they wrote their adjectives on a Grinch, colored him, cut, and glued.
Here is just one scene from our book exchange. The kids played a game with directions to pass LEFT or RIGHT while I read "Twas The Night Before Christmas". LEFT and RIGHT were written into the story, so it was a great way to see who knew their left from their right!

To round out our day, we ate our Christmas treats, watched the original (BEST!) version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and played Four Corners, Grinch style. This was a game I used to play in elementary school, and I remember it being one of my favorites as a student because we had to be quiet and sneaky. It's STILL a favorite of mine BECAUSE the kids have to be QUIET :)
Thanks to all who provided treats, juice, and books for the exchange. We had a great day!
