What's Happening in 1H?
Veteran's Day: On Tuesday, November 11th, all Benton Community elementary students will be performing at the Veteran's Day Program at the MS/HS Gym beginning at 9:30 a.m. Please have your child wear red, white, blue, or a combination of those three colors this day. We've been talking some as a class about how important this performance is to the people of our community and the kiddos are pumped to be a part of it!
Socktober: We've had tons of socks come from all over the country! Here is an updated map of where our socks have come from:

You should have a note coming home in your child's Take Home Folder tonight about our planned sock delivery. It will take place this Saturday. We will meet here at VHE at 8:30 a.m., load up the socks, and caravan into Cedar Rapids to Olivet Neighborhood Mission. This is not required, but if you have an opportunity to come with your child, it would be a GREAT way to end our project with the final, most important step: impacting others!
Wednesday Mini-Books: You will notice a new bag with a mini-book inside coming home tonight. This is a smaller copy of a book we are reading together during small group reading instruction. (Sorry for how light it copied; our copy machine has been on the fritz!) It is centered around our comprehension skill for the next two weeks, which is sequencing. Each Wednesday, your child will bring home a new mini-book with a skill sheet complete with guiding questions for you to ask your child. The idea is that your child is extending his or her learning or reviewing the skills we are discussing here at school with you at home. Just sign the mini-book and return it in your child's Take Home Folder. On Thursday, normal book cart books will resume.
Monthly Sight Word Checks: I will be sending home the post-assessment results of the October sight word check. However, beginning the month of November, I will instead start using a new sight word check we developed as a first grade team district-wide. This sight word check is something we will use across the district throughout the year to assess your child's progress in learning basic words. Your child should be able to read these words quickly (in 3 seconds or less) rather than spending time decoding them. This helps your child fluently in addition to aiding overall comprehension. (He or she is not spending time figuring out words and instead is focusing on meaning.)
Fall Conferences: There will be a note coming home soon about signing up for fall conferences. Upon receiving this note, please call as soon as possible to schedule a conference with me as time slots fill up quickly. We will be discussing the Trimester 1 report card, Standards-Based Grading and what this means for your child, as well as how your child is adjusting to first grade overall. I look forward to meeting with you and sharing all the great things happening! :)
I believe that's it for now! Please continue to email, send notes, or call with any questions!
Mrs. H
