Your child will be
bringing home a Take Home Writing Journal nightly along with his/her Take Home
Book. This journal is for your child to
practice his/her writing skills. Your child
can write about anything; we will start with 3 sentences first, and as the year
progresses, increase the amount of writing.
Your child may draw pictures to go along with their writing, but please
do not use markers.
Here are a couple of
guidelines:
- Please use a pencil to write.
- Please have your child include the date for each entry. Please use both sides of the pages to save on paper. Spelling is NOT a concern (unless they are easily decodable words like “cat” or “dog”, for instance, or sight words like “it”). NOTE: If your child consistently likes to write about castles, for example, feel free to help your child spell this word by adding it to the back of the front cover of their notebooks. This can serve as a sort of "word bank" for your child to refer back to each night. Just keep adding as you see fit.
- Help your child find things to write about (if needed) but please do not make your child write to a specific prompt unless your child requests this. Part of the writing process is independently brainstorming ideas. :)
- Please do not spend more than 10-15 minutes on this.
Thank you for supporting your child on the journey to becoming a better reader and writer!
Mrs. Happel
