News:
New "Homework" - Coming home soon (following spring break) will be new activities you can do with your child as nightly homework. Just like the Take Home Book and Journal, it will not be "graded" but is only a way for your child to show you the skills he/she is working on in school so you can gauge where they are. It also provides extra practice. It will look like a menu. You and your child can choose from a variety of activities tailored to your child's needs based on their goals and progress toward the first grade learning targets in literacy and math. I will also be including a life skills menu which will include things like address writing, handwriting practice, helping make a grocery list, and my personal favorite (and maybe yours, too?) completing a chore at home! It will allow your family some flexibility to choose activities which vary in length and complexity for your particular schedule at home. I'm super excited about them! You will still receive the Take Home Book to use if you wish, and the Take Home Journal will be tied to the activities printed in the menu but will NOT be required as it has been. I will not even need to see proof of the work your child does except your own initials to show your child has completed the tasks. Look for more information about that in the near future!
Read Across America - On Thursday, March 3rd, we will be celebrating Dr. Seuss's birthday with a variety of guest readers, literacy-themed activities, and a dress-up day! Your child may dress up like a book character. Pinterest (of course!) has a ton of really great ideas. For more information about this day, please see my blog post.
Goal Setting Sheets - In your child's Take Home Folder tonight will be your child's latest goals. These goals were chosen by your child based on learning targets for first grade. We talked about how to reach these goals. The conversations I had with them were awesome! If you have questions at all about these goals, let me know!
Spring Conferences - Spring conferences will be Monday, March 14th from 3:30 - 7:30 p.m. and Tuesday, March 15th from 2:30 - 7:30 p.m. Please call the school office or email Candi at cbenesh@benton.k12.ia.us to set up your conference. We ask that you call to schedule your conference no later than March 10th as time slots are filling up quickly. I look forward to sharing your child's progress!

What We're Learning:
Reading - We are learning about inferring by using clues from a story as well as making predictions about what might happen next based on clues. For fluency, we are learning about stress and intonation (pitch, volume) to match what is happening in the story. We are also talking about speed and pacing when reading for different purposes.
Writing - We are learning about how to write a letter to someone using a greeting, a message, and a closing. We wrote letters to first graders at Atkins Elementary as well as letters to other students in our class. We've also written letters to Mr. Junge! Next, we will spiral back to Personal Narratives.
During Word Work, we have worked on variant vowels and r-controlled vowels (-ir, -ur, -er, -ar, -or). We will be learning about words with ee and ea r-controlled vowels, variant vowel /ar/, and variant vowel /oo/.

Math - We have been working on memorizing doubles. We are doing tougher addition and subtraction (up to 20) as well as writing and counting to 120. Please work with your child on writing their numbers and counting to help prep them for this topic.
Science - We will start a new unit about Air & Weather. Students will explore wind, weather, and moon phases. In April, KCRG Meteorologist Justin Gertz will come visit our class to share some information about weather. We are also hoping to get out into our Outdoor Learning Space soon as the weather improves!
If you have questions about anything, please let me know!
