News:
Assessing and Sharing Student Progress - Your child has been bringing math assessments home for each math topic. Attached to each assessment is a half-sheet with the math standard, whether your child is meeting, progressing, or not yet meeting the standard, and next steps. So far, we've covered four math standards: measurement, organizing data (graphing), shapes, and fractional parts of shapes. Look for the fractional parts assessment to come home this week. PLEASE NOTE: if your child is progressing (P) or has not yet met the standard (AC/NY), please understand your child will have an opportunity to retake the math assessment after I have had a chance to meet with your child in a small group or one-on-one to reteach the specific skills. If you have any questions about this, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Take Home Journals - Please have your child write 3 related sentences in his/her journal. If your child would like to write more, by all means, encourage them :)
Socktober - Socktober has drawn to a close. We collected over 1,200 pairs of socks to donate to the homeless and people in need. That is AWESOME! Thank you for your help in spreading the word about our project. The kids were so excited! It was such an amazing experience to be able to physically donate the socks to Olivet Neighborhood Mission. They were so appreciative of our donation and are always in awe of the work our kids put in to this cause.
Fall Conferences - Please make sure to sign up for a 20-minute time slot for fall conferences. I have so many great things to share with you about your child's progress! Fall conferences are Monday, November 23rd from 3:30-7;30 p.m. and Tuesday, November 24th from 3-7:30 p.m.
Colder Weather Apparel - The temps are dropping, which means we'll need to begin dressing in layers. Hats, gloves, and winter coat season is upon us! Please make sure all of your child's outdoor clothing has his/her name inside. Now is a great time to start checking to make sure all of that outdoor winter gear fits!
December Book Exchange - Next month, as part of our winter party, we will do a book exchange. Books should be gender-neutral and under $5. Scholastic has a great selection of gender-neutral, affordable books. Stay tuned for more info!
What We're Learning:
Reading - We are learning about Visualizing and Analyzing Character. We have been practicing visualizing things in our minds like a movie in our heads, and talking about character traits (inside and outside.)
Writing - We are learning about complete sentences, the "who" and "what" parts of sentences (subject/predicate), and nouns vs. verbs.
During Word Work, we have worked on skills such as 3-letter blends and CVCe long a (cake, rage, etc.) We are now moving on to CVCe long o, long i, and open vowels.

Math - We have learned about 2-D and 3-D shapes and fractions (halves, quarters). We will be learning a very important life skill next: TELLING TIME to the hour and half hour! They get very excited about this math topic! Please support your child at home by making a habit of having them read analog and digital clocks. Having them "in on" their daily schedules really helps them learn responsibility as well!
Science - Our unit on Balls and Ramps is nearing an end. We are now moving on to the ramps portion of our unit. Students have made balls out of various materials and will test these balls using a variety of ramps and tubes to see how they move in space. We have had a great time using the Maker Space and each new time brings new sets of challenges and opportunities to try new things! Stay tuned for more about our Maker Space!
If you have questions about anything, please let me know!
