Report Cards Coming Home Today

Your child will be bringing home their report cards in their Take Home Folders today.  Please take a moment to look these over.  We will be discussing these at conferences, so if you have any questions about what you see, we can discuss them then.  You will see a couple of components of the report cards:

1. Narrative:  I have written a narrative for each child with brief comments highlighting general work behaviors as well as progress in the areas of reading, writing, and math.

2. Standards/Learning Targets: You will see the overall standards listed for reading, writing, and math listed on the report card.  Next to these standards, you will see an M, P, or AC (or NA, if it has not yet been assessed.)  Underneath the standards are specific learning targets, also with an M, P, AC, or NA.  Please understand, your child may not have an M at this point in the school year, and that is completely acceptable.  You'll notice a lot of Ps, which mean your child is progressing toward meeting the standard or learning target.  An AC, or Area of Concern, may also be found on your child's report card.  If this is the case, this is an area we would like you to continue working on at home to support the learning happening at school.  Conferences are a great time for us to come up with strategies and activities for your child to do at home to help strengthen these skills.

Likewise, if your child is already meeting the standards or learning targets for first grade, conferences are a great time for us to talk about extending and enriching your child to ensure he/she continues growing and learning, even if this means learning 2nd or 3rd grade concepts.

3. Standards for Specials (Music, Art, P.E.): This is printed on heavier Bobcat paper, and shows your child's progress in specials classes.

**4. Reading Recovery: Mrs. Anderson or Mrs. Mitchell has written a narrative to update you on your child's progress in Reading Recovery including text level, word writing vocabulary, accuracy, and self-corrections.

**Only applicable to families with children currently in the Reading Recovery program.

Again, if you have any questions at all about the report card, conferences are a great time for us to discuss these in addition to next steps for your child.

I look forward to seeing you at conferences!

Mrs. Happel
