News:

Justin Gertz to Visit - KCRG Meteorologist Justin Gertz will be visiting our first graders on Tuesday, April 12th.  We look forward to hearing from him about what it's like to be a meteorologist, how to use a green screen, and he will also be covering some air/weather topics as a nice tie-in to our Air and Weather science unit.

Green Screen Research Project - All first graders will have an opportunity to select a weather topic and research information related to the topic.  Small groups of students will meet, gather resources, and collect information to be put together into a presentation using a green screen.  Jonathan Wylie, a tech consultant from Grant Wood AEA, will be coming to help record students using a green screen to display graphics behind them.  Students will relate their research information via a teleprompter app.  Stay tuned for more photos (and video!) showing students engaged in this work, as well as their finished product.

Earth Day and Community Seedling Project - All Keystone Elementary students will participate in a community-wide Earth Day clean up and seedling planting project.  Through an Iowa DNR program called Trees for Kids, Keystone Elementary has been given 200 seedlings at no cost!  We will have four varieties: common lilac bushes, redbud trees (a smaller ornamental tree with showy lavendar and pink flowers in the spring), silver maple trees (a very fast growing tree), and sycamore trees (another very fast growing tree).  Some of these seedlings will be planted around the school while others will be available for classes to help plant in the community.  Stay tuned for more information about how you can help get involved in this great community service project!

What We're Learning:

Reading - We are learning about comparing and contrasting, making connections, and cause/effect.  For fluency, we are learning about stress and intonation (pitch, volume) to match what is happening in the story.  We are also talking about speed and pacing when reading for different purposes.

Writing - We are revisiting how to write personal narratives with real characters, a true setting, a problem, and a solution.  A personal narrative is a story about something that has happened in real life.  We are also working our way through the writing process (brainstorming/planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing.)

During Word Work, we have worked on ee and ea r-controlled vowels, variant vowel /ar/, and variant vowel /oo/. We will be learning about words with diphthong /ou/, diphthong /oi/, soft c and g, and silent letters.

Math - We have been working on place value with tens and ones as well as writing and counting to 120.  Please help support your child by helping them count and write to 120 if s/he does not already know how to do so.  We will be working on comparing larger numbers and adding/subtracting tens by using a hundred chart.

Science - We have started our unit on Air and Weather.  We've completed a Wind/Weather Vane Challenge, explored the properties of hot and cold air and how this relates to wind formation, and had a brief introduction to clouds.  Moving foward, we will be observing cloud types, researching weather-related topics of our choosing in small groups, and completing a culminating activity to show to you!
