Earth Day and Tree Planting

Today, we celebrated Earth Day by talking about all the ways we could help our planet.  We also learned the three Rs: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.  We watched a short video about the three Rs and composting.

Ask your child about the three Rs as well as recycling and composting!

One thing we talked about this week was reducing the amount of waste here at school.  We decided not to use straws at snack time or lunch.  We also talked about where our garbage goes when it is taken away, and the kiddos were very concerned about how this could affect the wildlife in our oceans.  We decided this could be one small step that we take to help keep our planet green and safe for all wildlife.

We also planted trees!  Before heading out to plant, we revisited The Lorax by Dr. Seuss.  We talked about what Mr. Seuss wanted us to learn from the story, and I was amazed at how insightful the kids were.  They really took the book as a call to action!  We planted two small Redbud seedlings.  They were shocked to see how small they were.  We compared the picture I showed them of a mature Redbud tree with beautiful pink blossoms with the 10 inch, brown seedling.  While we dug and got our hands dirty, we investigated worms in our soil and talked about the benefits worms bring to our soil.  It was a great day of outdoor learning!
