News:

First Grade Field Trip - It's hard to believe it's time for the first grade spring field trip already!  We will be heading to Twisters Gymnastics in the morning, then heading over to Cherry Hill Park for lunch.  In the afternoon, we will head over to Frey Pet Hospital.  If time allows, we'll make a quick stop at the VHE park to play before heading back to school.  If you have not already done so, please sign and return the field trip form and Twisters Gymnastics waiver.  Please remember your child will need a sack lunch!

Party at the Park  - On Friday, May 13th, please join the BCPTO for Party at the Park at Norway Elementary from 5:30-7:00.  There will be games, inflatables, and concessions available.  All Benton Community families are welcome to attend.

Step Up Day - Friday, May 20th will be Step Up Day at Keystone Elementary.  Look for more information in the next week.

Summer Brain Food - As the school year comes to a close, it's time to start thinking about how to keep your child going through the summer.  Prior to the last week of school, I will be sending a Summer Brain Food book with each student.  You are welcome to use these throughout the summer to give your child practice reviewing first grade skills.

What We're Learning:

Reading - We are learning about making connections, cause/effect, and drawing conclusions.  For fluency, we are learning about stress and intonation (pitch, volume) to match what is happening in the story.  We are also talking about speed and pacing when reading for different purposes.

Writing - We have been working on verb tenses (past, present, future) and will soon be moving on to commas in a series.  We will be revisiting book reviews.

During Word Work, we have worked on  diphthong /oi/ and soft c and g and will soon be learning about silent letters.  We'll also be learning about compound words.

Math - We have been working on place value with tens and ones as well as writing and counting to 120.  Please help support your child by helping them count and write to 120 if s/he does not already know how to do so.  We will be working on comparing larger numbers and adding/subtracting tens by using a hundred chart.  Hopefully, we can end the year by learning to count money!

Science - We have finished our unit on Air & Weather.  We have started our new unit on Dinosaurs!  We are rotating through different dinosaur stations where students learn about the continents and Pangea, paleontologists, fossils, excavating, and complete activities such as dinosaur sorting using vocabulary words like bipedal or quadrapedal.

If you have questions about anything, please let me know!
