Apple Tasting and Survey Graphing

The kiddos got to taste three kinds of apples: Song of September, Honeygold, and Honey Crisp.  After sampling all three varieties, we made a picture graph showing our favorite kinds.  After representing this information in a picture graph, we made a tally chart and a bar graph to show this data.  By a large margin, most students preferred the Honey Crisp (my personal favorite!) with Honeygold coming in second.  They really enjoyed tasting the different varieties, and we also had a nice little discussion about where these apples came from.  (Malcolm, Mr. Happel, and I picked them at Wilson's Orchard on Sunday!)  We also talked about what it means when fruit or veggies are "in season", and we talked about why each variety of apple might be named its respective name based on its characteristics.

Next week, we'll learn more about Johnny Appleseed as we celebrate his birthday!
