What's Happening in 1H?
Socktober: During the entire month of October, students at VHE will be planning and conducting a sock drive. We are asking for new socks in all sizes. We will donate them to Olivet Neighborhood Mission in Cedar Rapids on Saturday, November 1st. (Stay tuned for more information about this at a later date; you and your child are encouraged to attend the drop off!)
We had a chance to share with you what Socktober is all about during Parent Partnership Night. This is a largely student-run project in which students are using technology and various networking tools to help spread awareness of their project. Last year, students did things like designed T-shirts, posters, flyers, yard signs, collection boxes, made a YouTube video, and wrote a letter to the editor. This year, we're excited to see what the kiddos come up with! We had socks come in from around the world!
Take Home Books: Please continue to read with your child nightly. When you finish a book, write the title on the sheet included in your child's Take Home Book Bag, sign it, write a brief comment or two about how it went, and send it with your child back to school to receive a new one.
**If your child would rather read a book from home, please don't feel like you HAVE to read the Take Home Book. Just make note of the book you read together on the blue sheet included in the Take Home Book Bag so I get a general idea of what you read :)
Allergen Information: We DO NOT have any peanut or tree nut allergies at Van Horne Elementary this year. This means your child may bring PB and J, granola bars, etc. for sack lunch if you wish. This MAY change in the future if the district develops and adopts a district-wide peanut/tree nut policy. We will keep you posted!
Upcoming Field Trips: Our first field trip will be Thursday, October 9th to Grant Wood Area Education Agency to visit the Scale Up Classroom. There, we'll learn about some new technology tools and start working on our Socktober projects together. After that, we'll have lunch and head over to St. Luke's for a hospital tour. We'll get to see the helipad and pediatrics. This will tie in nicely to our unit on safety.
I believe that's it for now! Please continue to email, send notes, or call with any questions!
Mrs. H
