Writer's Workshop and Science Intro

We've begun learning about what Writer's Workshop looks like and sounds like in 1H.  During this time, there are three components: a mini-lesson as a whole group at the carpet, where we talk about what good writers do, writing time, when students have the opportunity to write about anything they choose, and sharing time, when they get to share their writing with the group.  The kids really enjoy getting to choose what they write about, and they LOVE that they get to use markers, crayons, and colored pencils to draw illustrations to go with their writing!

In Science, we've begun a smaller unit on trees and apples.  We began by observing our trees by Van Horne Elementary, taking careful notes and drawing what we saw in our Science Notebooks.  We noticed ants, cicada shells, and a bird's nest in our trees.  I wanted to include a picture of the kiddos hard at work during our science time, but my camera wasn't cooperating!  Stay tuned!

Next, we'll be creating a VHE Tree Guide with bark rubbings, photographs of our trees by our school, leaf samples, and some facts about our trees.  We'll be consulting multiple resources to help us identify what types of trees we've got by our school.  Throughout the year, we'll be visiting our trees to see how they change as the seasons change.
