Response Groups
During our Writer's Workshop time, the kiddos have begun learning how to put together and participate in Response Groups. Response Groups are organized by the students when they reach the revising stage of the process of taking a rough draft from a sloppy copy to a nice, clean published copy. During the revising stage, students make changes to their writing, adding details to make their stories more interesting for readers. Response Groups consist of three writers ready to revise. During a Response Group, students take turns reading their writing and offering suggestions for how to make the writing more appealing or interesting for the reader. We talked a lot about how to do this in a kind, helpful way, and also how to take suggestions. I had a great question yesterday: "What if we don't want to add what somebody has suggested?" We all agreed a kind way of responding (if they don't agree or don't choose to move forward with the suggestion) is to say, "Thank you. I'll think about that." They take Response Group work very seriously! :)
Skittles Graphing
Yesterday, due to the shortened 1:00 dismiss schedule, we didn't have time to get a full day of math in. Instead, we began a fun, short graphing activity with Skittles. Of course, the first question was, "DO WE GET TO EAT THEM?!?!" You may have noticed some extras coming home in plastic bags. They were so focused on the graphing aspect, they didn't have time to finish!
During the activity, the kiddos divided out their Skittles by color, counted how many of each color they received, and recorded this information in a tally chart. Using the information (or data), they then completed a bar graph. The last step, which we will finish today, is taking this data and transforming it into a pictograph.
That's it for now! Stay tuned for a post about upcoming events and be ready to mark your calendars!
