News:

Valentine's Day Boxes - Your child should have had a note in his/her Take Home Folder Friday explaining our Valentine's Day Box project.  Valentine's Boxes are due February 9th.  They should be shoe-boxed sized and have a slot large enough for students to deposit treats and/or notes.  Check out more details here.

Exchanging Valentines - Valentine's treats are NOT necessary.  If you would like to send Valentines, please send enough for each student (24).  To help streamline the distribution process, simply have your child write his/her name on the Valentine rather than addressing them.  This saves time for you and for us so we have more time to enjoy our party!  Our Valentine's Day Party will take place on February 11th instead of the 12th to accommodate for our Washington & Lincoln Presentation Day!

Washington & Lincoln Presentation Day - Friday, February 12th, our first graders will be presenting their work to you in the form of a museum.  We will open both classrooms and allow students and families to explore the projects our first graders have put so much work into!  This will begin at 9:45. At around 10:15, we will take part in a virtual field trip with the staff at Mt. Vernon (Washington's home!)  We are SO EXCITED about this opportunity!  The virtual field trip will conclude at approximately 10:45.  We will then get ready to go to lunch.  If you plan to attend and would like to eat lunch with your first grader, please call Candi in the school office.  You are also welcome to take your first grader with you as this is a noon dismissal day!

Student Profile Sheets - Friday, February 19th, all student profile sheets will go home.  These will include information about your child's midyear FAST testing scores as well as some goals your child and I have set in the coming months.  Please look for these and let me know if you have any questions.  It's exciting to compare fall data with winter data; they've all grown so much both physically and academically!

What We're Learning:

Reading - We are learning about finding important information in text and stating a summary.  For fluency, we will be working on characterization and feelings.

Writing - We are learning about how to write informational reports, as well as participating in shared research around George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.  Students are using a variety of resources to find facts related to their president, creating a visual with these facts, and completing an art-related project.

During Word Work, we have worked on skills such as long i, long e, long o, and long a digraphs.  Next, we will be working on words with y as a vowel and variant vowels before moving on to r-controlled vowels. (-or, -ar, -ur, -ir)

Math - Moving ahead, your child will be asked to memorize parts of ten and doubles. We'll be doing tougher addition and subtraction as well as writing and counting to 120.  Please work with your child on writing their numbers to help prep them for this topic.

Science - We have started our Plants & Animals unit.  So far, we have grown mini lawns and observed its changes after watering, fertilizing, and mowing.  Next, we will be planting wheat and observing what happens.

If you have questions about anything, please let me know!
