News:

Thank you to families who donated classroom supplies.  I also had quite a few personal gifts given to me.  They were not necessary :)  You all are too kind!

Colder Weather Apparel - The temps are dropping, which means we'll need to continue dressing in layers.  Hats, gloves, winter coats, snowpants, and boots are essential and must be brought to school daily!  Please make sure all of your child's outdoor clothing has his/her name inside.

What We're Learning:

Reading - We are learning about making connections (text-to-self, text-to-text, and text-to-world) as well as inferencing.  For fluency, we will be focusing on reading smoothly and using appropriate inflection and intonation (voice going up or down to sound like the character and to make the story interesting to hear!)

Writing - We are learning about how to write a book review.  They are learning what an opinion is and how to state it with supporting evidence.  Students are learning how to go through the writing process (brainstorming, drafting, revising/editing, and publishing) with some adult support, but as we move on, will be asked to be fairly independent throughout the process.  Once they hit the editing/publishing stage in the writing process, I step in to conference with them individually about their writing.

During Word Work, we have worked on skills such as digraphs ch, th, wh, and sh.  We're moving on to long a digraphs (ai, ay), long o digraphs (oa, ow), long e digraphs (ea, ee), and long i digraphs (igh, ie).

Math - Moving ahead, your child will be asked to memorize parts of ten and doubles. We'll be doing tougher addition and subtraction as well as writing and counting to 120.  Please work with your child on writing their numbers to help prep them for this topic.

Science - We are starting a mini-unit on animal tracks in the snow.  We've read Over and Under the Snow, and talked a little bit about animal tracks and the clues they can tell us.  We will be using our outdoor learning space to look for clues in our own "backyard" about the types of animals we can see out and about in Iowa winters.

If you have questions about anything, please let me know!
